Gene Watkins - Head Coach
Coach Watkins is entering his 6th season as the head baseball coach at Mira Mesa High School.
In his 4 years he has compiled a record of 86-55 overall and an Eastern League record of 33-15.
In just his second year Coach Watkins led the Marauders to a League Championship and a CIF DI Quarterfinals
appearance. Taking over the program in 2005, Gene has led Mira Mesa to 2 league championships and 3 playoff
appearances, going to the quarterfinals in 2006 and the semifinals in 2007.
Gene has also spearheaded a massive overhaul of the Mira Mesa Baseball complex. Facility improvements
include, fencing placed down left field line, concrete poured in seating areas, and pavers added in facility
entry to name a few. “We really want to have the best facility in the City. Our kids want to play at a
place they are proud of and we put a lot of time and money into making our place nice,” adds Coach Watkins.
Along with turning around a program with a very rich tradition, Coach Watkins has seen 7 of his players move
onto the college ranks, along with 2007 graduate Deryk Hooker being drafted in the 7th round by the
St. Louis Cardinals. “We want to help develop players that can move onto the next level both academically
and athletically. We have been fortunate to have some great kids the past 4 years and feel that more and
more schools are now coming to Mira Mesa to find their future players,” says Coach Watkins.
Gene has 31 years of coaching experience in both baseball and football. He has coached at Granite Hills,
Patrick Henry, Madison, El Cajon Valley, and Crawford High School. Coach Watkins is an alumnus of local
Kearny High School where he played both football and baseball. From Kearny he spent one year at Mesa College
where he received a football scholarship to the University of Nevada-Reno where he was the starting
quarterback for three years.
Coach Watkins is an Industrial Arts teacher at Lewis Middle School in San Diego City Schools. He has 6th
period P.E. at Mira Mesa where he works with the baseball players. Gene received his B.A. from
San Diego State, Teaching credential from Point Loma Nazarene, and his M.A. from USIU.
Coach Watkins lives in the Del Cerro area with his wife Sandie. |

Sheldon Watkins - Head Asst Coach
Coach Sheldon is in his second season back at Mira Mesa after spending
the previous season as the hitting coach at Indiana University.
Previously he served as Coach Watkins head assistant coach from 2005-2007. “I am glad to be back home and
really look forward to building on what we have already accomplished here at Mira Mesa,” says Sheldon.
Coach Sheldon has been a part of 3 CIF appearances and a
two league championships in 2006 and 2009.
Sheldon’s duties include working with the Mira Mesa hitters and infielders as well as coaching third base.
During Coach Sheldon’s four years at Mira Mesa, the Marauders compiled an overall record of
68-45 and a
league record of 33-15. “Mira Mesa has a very strong tradition in baseball and we want to continue to
build on it. We have great community support and we get great athletes every year,” adds Coach Sheldon.
Coach Sheldon spent last year at Indiana University where he served as the hitting coach and outfield coach.
Under Sheldon’s watch the Hoosiers led the Big Ten in hitting, finishing 6th in the country. Indiana also
finished 3rd in the Big Ten Tournament, their best finish in a decade. Under Sheldon, two Hoosiers
earned all-American honors: Josh Phegley (second-team) and Jerrud Sabourin (freshman All-American).
“Last year was a great experience. I have developed many relationships that I hope help find our players
places to play in college,” states Sheldon.
Sheldon is a San Diego native who attended local Patrick Henry High School where he played baseball.
From Patrick Henry, Sheldon played 1 year at the University of La Verne before transferring to Grossmont College. From Grossmont, Sheldon was recruited to local Point Loma Nazarene University where
injuries cut his career short.
